“War and bath towels” a little strange title for this serious book.
A journalist and a writer/illustrator went to visit hot springs and public baths in Thailand, Korea, Okinawa, and two other places in Japan.
It started as a travel journal, but this series of trips lead them to face the modern history of Japan, especially during World War II.
I read it when it was published online, and it was hard to read as Japanese, but also it was something I needed to learn.
With gentle, but sincere writing of them and Kanai’s drawings, I could finish reading it. I knew it was published as a book, but finally got to purchase it.
This time, I felt little different with my recent experience of short trip to Canada, and maybe because I read it while working with a veteran who always talked about their experience in Okinawa as a great one.
Since I moved here, 100% of people who told me that they had lived in Japan is who served there.
It is a mixed feeling for me. As a person from Japan’s main island, we are the one who forced Okinawan to have 70% of American bases on that small island.
I am absolutely against war.
And I had to learn more about our history.
As same as in USA, there is a strong movement to erase Japan’s modern history by conservatives.
We need to stay critical and keep learning.
どこで最初に見つけたのかは覚えていないけれど、オンラインで連載しているのを途中で知って読んでいた。
ああ、こういうことが知りたかった、と思うことばかりで、画面をスクロールするのが辛いところも、おふたりのやわらかい文とまっすぐな視線で、静かな気持ちで読み進めることができた。
いつか紙の本も欲しいと思っていたので、ようやく手にできてうれしい。
いちおう既読なので、すぐに読み終わったけれど、今回はまた違った気持ちで読み終えた。
先日行ったカナダと、今わたしたちが住んでいる町の両方のオカノガン族のことを考えたり、沖縄の基地にいたことを良い思い出としていつも語ってくれる技師と働きながら読んだこともあるかもしれない。
ここに移住してから、「日本に住んでいた」は、ほぼイコール「基地にいた」であること。日本がしてきたこととしていること、アメリカがしてきたこととしていること。
アメリカでも（主に奴隷にされた人たちやネイティブアメリカンについての）歴史を教えない流れがどんどん強くなっている。
もっと知りたい、知らなければ、と思う。

I started new book.
“War and Bath Towels"
It’s reports and essay of trips to public bath house and hot springs in Japan, and around Japan.
I already read it online, but wanted to have a hard copy.
Today I read the first half: Thailand, Okinawa, and Korea.
As Japanese, we need to learn the modern history, even though it hurts so bad.
I don’t want to end this book, so I re-read again in the afternoon.
今日から新しい本を読む。
『戦争とバスタオル』、日本やアジア諸国の温泉と銭湯を回って、日本軍がやってきたことを見つめる取材録。
オンラインで連載しているときに読んでいたけれど、今回紙の本で手に入ったので読み直し。
前半、タイ、沖縄、韓国編を読んだだけで、いろいろ打ちのめされる。
金井真紀さんのかわいらしいイラストが挟んであるのが助かる。
ときにおもしろく、悲しく、真摯に史実に向き合った本、今の日本にこの本が存在しているのがありがたいと思った。
一気に最後まで読むのがもったいなくて、午後時間がある時にまた前半を読み返した。

It was slow, but no cancellation nor ER, so was just perfect.
I finished reading my book.
I knew the hard part as I read it when they published online.
And yet, it was still hard.
Today they lifted mask mandate, but I still wore it to hide my crying face.
I brought next book, but couldn’t shift myself, so went back to this book.
キャンセルもでず、ERの追加もなく、平和にすぎていった。
『戦争とバスタオル』を読み終わる。
オンライン連載の時からいちばんずっしり重く、考えさせられた部分が本でも一番最後に来る。
被害と加害。両方を経験しないと行けなかったかつての少年。「鬼」にさせられた「英雄」
今日から病院ではマスクの着用義務が終わったのだけれど、涙を隠すのに好都合なのでずっとつけていた。
次の本を持っていっていたけれど、あまり切り替える気分にならず、しばらく読み返したりする。
