The original is French.
My Japanese friend told me about this book and so I read it in English translation first.
(“Tistou of the Green Thumbs” Translated by Humphrey Hare. )
She sent me this Japanese translation later.
I felt like Japanese version is much better for design and maybe for translation.
I don’t know French, so I cannot know that, but I could tell that Japanese translator cared about this story a lot. He also wrote beautiful note in the end.
If anyone can read French, I recommend reading it in French.

日本のお友達に教えてもらって、英訳で先に読んでいた本。
オリジナルはフランス語。
この日本語の文庫本は送っていただいたもの。
なんというか、翻訳者の愛がつまっている。
それから装丁、レイアウトをした人たちの気持ちも。
英語版では感じられなかった、挿絵画家への敬愛も感じる。
物語は同じだし、伝わってくるものは同じだけれど、翻訳やその他いろんなものが集まって本はできているんだなと感じる。
フランス語が読めるなら、英語版と日本語版と比べてみるのだけれど‥。
ジャクリーヌ・デュエームという挿絵画家の世界観もかなりこの物語をささえていると思う。
とても好きな本。

『みどりのゆび』を読んでいたけれど、ほぼ2周してしまう。
英語の本をなにか見繕わなくては。
