I don’t remember why I purchased this book.
But I guess I found on stuff’s pick page.
Also I have seen the Japanese version in Japanese bookstore.
I loved her Moomin stories.
They are sometimes very cold and cynical and most of time in winter.
This book is not related to the series but I can see the connection.
I felt like the author put most of her opinion about community, money, being artist, being honest, …, and I liked them.
It got weird and unsettling quick in the second half, but somehow remains humorous.
I loved that I started this book on snow day and finished on sunny day closer to spring just like in the story.
どうしてこの本を購入したか、全然思い出せないのだけど、きっと本屋さんのおすすめのページに出てきたのかなと思う。
日本語訳を本屋さんで見かけたことはあったはず。それでピンと来て購入した。
ムーミンの原作を読むのが10代の頃とても好きだったのだけど、これはヤンソンの真髄が剥き出しになったような本だなと感じる。
作家であること、お金のこと、誠実であること、人づきあいのこと、いろんなことへのヤンソンの意見が詰まっていると感じた。
途中からどんどん心配な感じになっていくのだけど、その不穏さもまたおもしろい。
大雪の日から読み始めて、緩み始めた頃に読み終わってとても良かった。

I started new book.
“The True Deceiver” by Tove Jansson.
It was a perfect story to read on a snow day in this small town.
雪がどんどん降ってくる中新しい本を読み始める。
トーベ・ヤンソンの”The True Deceiver” （邦訳は『誠実な詐欺師』）
これは今日みたいな日に、この小さな町で読むのにぴったりだった。
フィンランドの雪深い小さな町での物語。
英訳というのは、英語ネイティブの人がかいた英語の本より読みやすい。
言葉への向き合い方が違うのだと思う。
するすると、半分くらい読んだ。

I could read here and there.
It was funny how realistic about this main character who is too honest for everything and so children in village started calling her witch.
She couldn’t stand her employer who’s rich spending money as if throwing away.
She said that “I feel really ill when I see how you throw money down the drain for no reason at all. Because what you throw away, what you utterly despise, is quite simply possibilities. … Without money, a person’s thinking gets narrow. It shrivels!”
I like how the employer didn’t understand her at all.
I didn’t expect this story saying lots about money.
読書もぼちぼち。
お金持ちの絵本作家のところに住み込み始めた主人公が、誠実すぎて疎まれる有様が、おかしくも理解できてリアルだった。
絵本作家が、お金を贅沢には使わないものの、取引に手を抜いたり、丁寧に扱わないことについて怒る主人公。
あなたがお金をドブに捨てるのを見ていると具合が悪くなる。あなたがこうも簡単に捨てているものは可能性なのだ‥お金がないとアイデアも豊かに生まれない、全て縮んでしまう、というところは切実だった。
何を言っているのかわからないと、ポカンとしている絵本作家も。
トーベ・ヤンソン自身はどちらのタイプだったんだろう。まぁ、主人公側かな。
お金について考える話だとは思わなかった。ここからどうなるのか。

I could finish my book.
The end was abrupt.
But thinking her other work, maybe it made sense.
I am happy that I finished this book now in the early spring.
少し合間もあったので、読書を。
『誠実な詐欺師』を読み終わった。
え、ここで終わり？というような静かな終わりで、さすがムーミンの原作者だと思う。
春の兆しが見え始めた時期に読み追われてよかった。
そっけない調子の英語は多分原語に合っているのだろうけれど、本当のところはわからないな。
