It was bumpy, but we made one cancellation and scanned the rest.
I started the new book. “The Member of the Wedding” by Carson McCullers.
It’s translated into Japanese by Haruki Murakami.
I can understand why he picked this one.
The way 12-year-old thinks are interesting.
I love how the summer afternoon were written well in the book.

バタバタとしたけれど、1件キャンセルしただけで、午後もスキャンを続行できた。
本を読み進める。
カーソン・マッカラーズの『結婚式のメンバー』
どうして村上春樹がこれを訳したのかわかる気がする。
昔、太宰治の『女生徒』を読んで、どうして女の子の気持ちがこんなに書けるのだろうと思っていたけれど、こちらはどうだろうか。
46年発行だから、言い回しに少し引っかかるところはありつつも、基本的に読みやすい。
アメリカの夏のあっけらかんとして気だるい感じがとてもよく伝わってくる。

It was only Josh and I today, and I could read.
There was this sentence: "They are the we of me.”
All in Italic.
This was how 12 year old explain the sense of belongings.
I liked it very much, and also I was thinking this would be hard to translate into Japanese as we almost always omit the subject.

今日はジョシュと2人で、そんなに忙しくもなく、読書が進んだ。
このところ全然読めなかったのは、やっぱり話し声が聞こえていたからだと思う。
主人公は12歳、思春期なのだろう、いろんなことをもてあまして、どうしていいかわからない感じがよく伝わってくる。
おもしろい1行があった。
"They are the we of me.”
直訳すると、「彼らがわたしにとっての、わたしたちなのだ」だけれど、ちょっとこれじゃ伝わらない。
英語では常に主語が要るから、主語をI にするかWeにするかは選択だ。
わたしだと、夫とわたしは、と言う時にWeを使ったり、
日本人は、と言う時にWeを使ったりする。（これはThey にするときもあって、それも自分の中でおもしろい）
働いている会社を指して言う時もある。
その時々に頭の中で瞬間的に選んでいる感覚がある。
この一文では、そういう意味でのWeなのだけど、日本語ではほぼ常に主語が省略されているから、これを伝え切るのは難しいように感じる。

We had this big time slot in the afternoon, and I could read a lot.
When she described the summer afternoon saying “like the center if the cake…, a cake which failed”, it really gave me the feeling of humid summer.
This story takes place in Oregon I believe, and so it’d be more humid than here.

午後は途中でぽっかり大きな間があって、たくさん読書ができた。
夏の午後を表すのに、失敗して凹んだケーキの真ん中みたいな、という描写が出てきて、
ああ、よくわかると思った。
濃密で重たくて、暑い感じ。
舞台はオレゴンだから、ここより断然湿度が高いし、夏はそれなりに蒸すだろうと思う。

We thought it’ll be busy afternoon, but it was actually quiet.
So I could read.
I’m at the half way to go, and I found a small sign of sad ending, hope it won’t end that way.

午後も忙しそうだと思っていたけれど、そのまま過ぎていった。
読書も少し進める。
今中盤くらいなのだけど、終わり方を暗示させるような一文があって嫌な予感がする。

It was supposed to be a quiet day, but we had 3 add-ons.
I managed to read a little.
There was a scene about piano tuning and people were scared of it.
That was really funny to me.
I’d think it’s just beautiful sound.

今日は静かな日のはずが、追加が3件入って、結構バタバタする。
でも隙間時間もあって、読書もできた。
ピアノのチューニングの音がどこかからして、それが気味の悪いこととして描かれているのにはびっくりした。
なんとも思わないというか、むしろきれいな音、とわたしなら思いそうだな。

We had a long studies.
Which means I had time to read.
I finished the book.
It was not very conventional story, and I liked it.
There was a new character hopped in in the last few page.
The tragedy I was expecting didn’t happened but other thing happen.
There was not even one page about the wedding itself.
Wow.
I will remember some of little things about this book.


今日は長めのスキャンが続いた。
つまり本を読む時間が多かった。
ついに読み終わる。
最後の最後で新しい登場人物が出てきたり、予想していた悲劇は起こらなかったものの、別の形でそれは突然もたらされる。
結婚式の描写もなんと1ページ以下！
はー、型にはまってなくてとても良かった。
ストーリーより、細かい描写がずっと印象に残りそうな本。
