I watched Stephen Colbert’s interview of George Saunders and ordered this book online.
His latest was hardcover and I prefer paperback, so I picked this one randomly.
It turned out a great choice.
His writing style and the crazy story makes it hard to focus, but I guess because I was stuck inside van, I had to just keep reading.
Also, this is something that non-native speaker can do better as we are trained to power through sections that hard to understand. Stopping by each word will not help you.
If you keep going, you might find some que that breaks down all the mysteries.
Many of stories in this book was opened for me in that way.
Once it makes sense, I can enjoy it.
Only one of the stories didn’t click till the end.
All over, this was a perfect book to read inside MRI van.
If you like weird short stories in the New Yorker, you will love this book.
たまたま作者が出ているインタビューを見て、たまたま購入した短編集。
不思議な世界観と、書き方で、入り込むまではしんどい。
あきらめずに文字を追っていくと、いきなりすっと視界が広がるように話がわかるようになる。ひとつの言い回しや単語に囚われないで、わからなくてもとにかく先に進む、というやり方は英語の入試問題を読んでいるような気分になった。
バンの中という不思議な場所で読むのにぴったりだった。
現実と幻想が違和感なく混ざっているような。
読み終わった後、夫に貸したけれど、かなり苦戦しているようなので、好き嫌いが別れると思う。わたしはけっこう好きだった。

Today, we had weird problem.
The bridge in between the van and hospital corrupted suddenly.
We made it work again, but it was scary and strange.
I was reading George Saunders’s “Tenth of December”
and I felt like I’m in the book
I realized that my favorite translator translated this into Japanese.
She only picks weird and interesting books, so I was happy that I happened to choose this one.
今日はトレイラーと病院の間にかかっている橋が急に外れたり、なんだか不思議な日だった。
ちょうど読み始めたジョージ・サンダースの短編集は不思議な世界観で、
そこに飲み込まれたみたいだった。
買ってから気づいたけれど、この ”Thenth of December” という短編集は岸本佐知子さんが訳しているらしい。
岸本さんが選んだなら「当たり」だと思ったけれど、ほんとうに当たりだった。

In George Saunders book, I started this short story with weird feeling and realized that it was the original story of the movie we watched recently.
Tried to read through without thinking about the movie was hard.
But then, it was much better than the movie.
Oh, wow, it was funny experience
I had watched disappointing movie adoption of books I read before, but this time was different.
Dan asked me to lend the book after I finished, so I am looking forward to hear his thoughts on this.
読んでいる短編集の中の一話が、タイトルから違和感があったのだけど、1ページ終わらないうちに、最近見た映画の原作だと気づいた。
わ、これはいままでになかったパターンかも。
想像の中で、どうしても映画の登場人物に引っ張られるのだけど、それをなるべく見ないようにしつつ読む。
最後まで読んだら、映画より原作の方が格段に良いパターンだった。
映画では話を膨らまそうとして失敗している。
原作をすでに読んでいて、映画化の結果にがっかりしたことはあるけれど、これは逆だった。
わー、おもしろい体験。
ああ、そういう意図だったのか、という発見があった。
読み終わったら貸してと夫に言われているので、彼の感想が楽しみだ。

It was slow in the morning.
We had 2 hours break.
I finished one story.
It’s supposed to be a diary and all grammar is messed up.
i.e. Thomas funny.
But it became fun to read by the end of story.
I’m curious how they translate this into Japanese.
今日は午前中はとてものんびりしていた。
お昼2時間くらい空いて、ランチを挟んでしっかり本を読む。
日記形式になっている短編を読み終えたのだけれど、
文法がめちゃくちゃで、例えばbe動詞がすべて抜け落ちてる。i.e. Thomas funny.
急いで書いている設定だからか、しゃべっている風だからか。
でもだんだんそれが癖になっておもしろかった。
岸本さんはこれをどう訳したのかな。

Today everything went smooth.
We had a big lunch break, so I finished reading the book.
It was good.
Some of them were hard to understand because of his style,
but overall i enjoyed it very much.
In the end of the book, they had conversations with David Sedaris.
Wow.
今日はスムーズに進んでいった。
お昼、少し時間が空いたので、本を読み終わる。
はー、最後まで不思議だった。
頭の中の妄想と、実際に起こっていることが区別なく描かれていて、
でもいつも考えていることはこういう感じに近いかもしれないと思う。
巻末にディビッド・シダリスとの対談も載っている。
彼もまた奇妙な話を書くのでこれも楽しみだ。
