I thought I finished this book, but in reality, I stopped reading at the beginning.
The first half part is called “Stories” (2016-2018) and the second part is “Essays” (2012-2014)
“Stories” are very short, sometimes it’s few sentences.
And it was really fun to read at work.
But the essays are also feels short because of Zambreno’s gossipy style.
I loved the part of her old friends.
And the essay about moving to NYC which is addressed to Kathy Acker.
The essay around movie “Wanda” which I really want to watch.
I can’t describ this book.
All became one with old memory of mine. I felt somehow nostalgic.
“Some English professor once called a method of skipping around reading Ulysses ”the Marilyn Monroe method, “ if so, my reading at work is also that skipping method.
For some reason, I felt this is the best book for that reading method.
I will re-read this book again and I can tell that I will enjoy it again.
既読だと思っていたら、途中で止まっていた作品。
Stories という、1−3ページの短い作品が続く前半パートと、Essays という、4つのエッセイの後半パートで構成されている。前半は(2016-2018) 、後半は(2012-2014)と書かれているように、だいぶ以前に書かれたエッセイのようだ。
仕事の合間に読むには細切れの話はとてもおもしろかった。
後半のエッセイも、ザンブレノ特有のゴシップ話のような書き方でいろんなところへ飛んでいく。
失われた、昔の、女性とのフレンドシップについての部分が好きだった。
キャシー・アッカーに宛てて書いた、ニューヨークへ引っ越した直後のエッセイも。
最近界隈で話題になっていた映画、”Wanda” とその監督についても。
全体の感想をひとことでまとめられない。
あんまり覚えていない記憶の中に取り込まれてしまったようで、懐かしい感じがするのが不思議。
本をつまみ食いするように飛ばして読むことを「マリリン・モンロー方式」と揶揄した教授が出てくるのだけれど、わたしの仕事中の読み方はそんな感じかもしれない。
集中力に波が出るし、その日の状況に左右される。
でもこの本にはとてもあっていると感じる。
またいつか読み直しても、新鮮に楽しめそう

It was kinda slow today.
I read Kate Zambreno’s “Screen Test”
It’s a collectioin of 2-3 pages of wriiting.
In the back, there are comment by Brizan Evenson reads,
“Call them stories (after Lydia Davis), reports (after Gerald Murnane), or screen tests (inventing a new genre altogether like Antoine Volodine). “
In any case, it fits my purpose to read at work.
Interestingly, although it’s a different format, the feelings are almost same as the last book I read “To Write As If Already Dead,” I assume it’s because of the gossipy way of writing.
This book ”Screen Test” is published before that, and there is one in between: a novel “Drift” which I read last year(?).
今日は比較的のんびりの日だった。
ケイト・ザンブレノの ”Screen Test” を読む。
読み終わったと思い込んでいたけれど、前半で止まっていたみたい。
2、3ページの短いものが続いている。１ページの、詩みたいなものもある。
「これを（リディア・デイビスにならって）ストーリーと呼ぶのか、（ジェラルド・マーネインにならって）レポートとするのか、それとも（アントイン・ヴォルディンのように新しいジャンルを開発して）『スクリーンテスト』なのか。」と裏表紙の評にある。
わたしにとっては短くて、仕事中に読みやすい。
細切れのようで、先日読んだ”To Write As If Already Dead” と変わらない感覚があるのは、
ザンブレノの、ゴシップを重ねるような書き方からきていると思う。
時系列的にはこの本の方が先に出ている。
間にもう一冊あって、それは去年？読み終わった”Drifts” という小説。

I read a lot today.
But couldn’t answer to the question about the book.
It’s very complicated and if you are not familiar with her style, you wouldn’t understand.
For me, it’s very interesting.
今日も読書が進む。
でも、何の本を読んでいるのと聞かれてぱっと答えにくい内容。
ジャンルもなんといえばいいのか。
わたしにはとてもおもしろいのだけれど。

We thought it’ll be busy, but it turned out kinda slow day.
Jolee was out today, so I could concentrate on reading.
I used to be able to shut down all conversations in English,
but now it’s getting hard as I understand better.
I finished Kate Zambreno’s book today.
I enjoyed it thoroughly and really liked it but it is hard to summarize this work.
忙しくなるかと思ったらキャンセルが出たりして合間にけっこうゆっくりした。
今日はジョリーがいないので、久しぶりに静かで読書に集中した。
英語での会話が背景だったのはもうだいぶ前のことで、ふたりが話しているとけっこう持っていかれる。
今日はその分集中して、ケイト・ザンブレノの本を読み終えた。
たくさん興味深い部分があったし、楽しく読んだのに、全体を思い出そうとすると見えなくなる、不思議な本だった。
集中できなかったのかな、とぱらぱら読み返してみたけれど、どれも覚えている。
