Michiko Inukai is a granddaughter of Prime Minister of Japan, Tsuyoshi Inukai (1855-1932) whose assassination Japanese students learn in the textbook.
She came to Boston in 1948 to get to Europa.
Unlike any lady from high class and wealthy family, she makes lots of money by herself and as many troubles.
She organized her own lectures to earn travel fees. In one brief sentence she mentions senator Kennedy came to listen to her.
Although her goal was Europa, she writes about her admiration for good old Americans.
For starting to work at hospital, I had to describe my TB situation many times and as Michiko was institutionalized in California for TB (also started successful handmade business in the hospital), I re-read this book which my cousin sent to me years ago.
This book always encourages me.

いとこが数年前に送ってくれた文庫本。
犬養毅の孫である作者は1948年にボストンに留学、その後ヨーロッパへ。1957年に帰国。
お嬢様とは思えない行動力のかたまり。特に最初の『アルバイトの記』が最高。
アメリカに渡ってからヨーロッパへ向けて出港するまでの事件だらけの数年をぎゅっとまとめてある。
結核になってカリフォルニアで入院する場面があって、それもふつうの入院では終わらないのだけれど、今回、わたしが病院での仕事を始めるために結核について考えないといけないことがあったので再読したくなった。
やっぱり元気をもらう。
他の章でも、オランダで洪水のあと災害救助での各国からの若い女性の活躍ぶりや、女性ひとりで旅をするなかで出会うあれこれがとても生き生きとしている。
これはお嬢さんの武者修行らしいのだけど、こんな行動的なお嬢さんって他にもいたんだろうか。
舞台はほぼほぼずっとヨーロッパなのだけれど、アメリカ人に対してのかなり好意的な意見があちこちに出てくるのもわたしにはしみじみうれしい。
