I found about this book on Jonathan van Ness’s podcast.

The author is Indigenous scientist, Jessica Hernandez, PhD.
In the podcast, Jessica told Jonathan “you're a displaced relative rather than an invasive species.” And it was a beautiful moment.
In this book, there were many topics over various places and peoples.
I was thinking about Indigenous peoples in Japan.
In April and first half of May, my work was irregular, so it took me long to finish this book.
But I think I needed to take time to read this important one.
ジョナサン・ヴァン・ネスのポッドキャストで知った本。
Indigenous インデジネス、つまり原住民のひとたちの今現在向き合っている問題について。
作者はマヤ族と、エル・サルバドールの原住民のルーツを持つ。
ポッドキャストの中で、「自分はInvasive species （外来種を指す言葉。侵略者、という響きがある）だから‥」と自虐気味なジョナサンに対して、「わたしたちはその言葉を使いません。Displaced relatives（元来の土地から離れた親戚）と呼びます。」という著者の言葉がとても響いた。
たしかに植民地者側の子孫であっても、ルーツから切り離されていることには変わりない。
とてもやさしい考え方だと思った。
この本は多角的にIndigenousのひとびとのことを見つめている。
わたしはどうしても、アメリカの、いわゆるネイティブアメリカンのことを考えがちだったけれど、南米にも、そして世界中にも、日本にも、Indigenousのひとたちはいる。そしてそれぞれの長くて濃厚な歴史と文化がある。
もっと知りたいなと思った。
4月から5月前半は仕事がイレギュラーで、読む時間があまり取れなかった。
そのぶん、ゆっくり読めてよかったかもしれない。

I started new book: Fresh Banana Leaves by Jessica Hernadez. PhD.
I found this book on podcast by Jonathan Van Ness.
Since moved here, I am interested in Indigenous Peoples and cultures.
This book is about Jessica’s family, I think, and it’s not only in US.
The situation is really different in Central America.
So is in Japan.
I was thinking about Indigenous people in Japan, as well as Asian countries where Japan tried to colonize.

中南米の原住民の人たちの立場は、アメリカとはまた違う。
開拓民、コロニアルリズム。
日本ではどうか、と思いながら読む。
どこも、ひとことで語れない事情が入り組んでいる。
タイトルがとてもいい。Fresh Banana Leaves。

It was busy for second, but I had time to read.
I started reading about Ecocolonialism.
I had little idea about that, but it seems more complicated.
While reading, I was thinking how Okanogan tribe is divided by border.
朝一瞬ばたばたしたけれど、昨日よりは落ち着いている。
本を読む時間も取れた。
エココロニアリズムについての章に入る。
温暖化によって住む場所を追われてしまったネイティブの人たちを含むマイノリティのことかと思ったけれど、話はもっと複雑そうだった。
アメリカにはトライブがたくさん存在している。
そのうち政府が認めた500～のトライブには自治権があり、国としての存在に近いのだけれど、もともとの土地から強制移動させられていたり、遊牧する民族だったりすると、土地の力から切り離されてしまっていることがほとんど。
オカノガンがこことカナダとに二分されていることを思いながら読んだ。

I could read my book today.
It’s about how Indigenous peoples care about their nature and land.
It is more like family rather than place to harvest.
先週よりはスムーズに進んでいった。
そうそう、いつもはこんな感じだった、と思いながら進める。
今日は本も読めた。
Indigenous の人たちが自然とどう関わっているかという話がとてもよかった。
必要なものしか取らない。
木を切った後は、なにか贈り物をおいておく。
ラベンダーやスギの葉など。
食べ物を取る場所というだけではない、家族のようなつき合い方。

I could read my book today.
It’s written with this very textbook like way, so it was hard to concentrate, but today one chapter got me.
It was about permculture.
The permculture was started by a white Austrailian which I knew, but I didn’t know that he lived with Indigenous people there and that was how he leaned how to live with nature.
The author criticized that it is a steal.
And I agree.
I still like their idea, but I think they made mistake how to use their knowledge.
読書を進める。
教科書的口調でなかなか入り込みにくいけれど、今日読んだ箇所ではっとしたところがあった。
パーマカルチャーについて。
パーマカルチャーはオーストラリアの白人が提唱し始まったことは知っていたけれど、アボリジニの先住民族のひとたちと暮らして、そこで学んだ知恵を元にしていることは知らなかった。
著者はそれは文化の盗用ではないか、と主張する。
確かに、パーマカルチャーが知られることによって実際の利益（公式インストラクター養成のクラス授業料など）を得るのはアボリジニのひとたちではない。
パーマカルチャーそのものには惹かれるけれど、いただいた知恵の扱い方を間違えているんだなと思った。

I could read well today.
I love the story of Indigenous peoples.
The author’s puebleo’s women wore braids around the head like a crown.
They believe that the crown connect the Earth and sky.
The reason man’s traditional clothes are white and simple compared to women’s is men is supposed to be a reflector of the lights women radiates.
The other Indigenous peoples believe that god is in the ocean, and they will go in the ocean if anything happened them, and release the emotions there.
読書もよくはかどった。
南米のIndigenousの人たちの部分がとても興味深い。
作者の母方の女性たちは、髪を三つ編みに結って、それを冠のように頭の上で整える。
その冠が、大地と天をつなぐ役割をすると信じているから。
女性とMuxes ムセス（第3の性）はカラフルな民族衣装なのに、男性は真っ白なのは、男性は女性の放つ光を増幅する反射版だから、らしい。
他の部族にとっては海が神聖なもので、なにかあると海に入って感情を手放す。
こういう話大好きだな、いわゆる三大宗教のこういう話には惹かれないけれど。

I could finish my book.
As the author resides in Seattle, she mentions about indigenous people in WA.
I really appreciate that.
I took photo of one page and the cover, and sent to my friend.
They told me that they heard lots of nice things about this book.
本を最後まで読み終わる。
作者がシアトル在住なこともあって、ワシントン州のIndigenous のひとたちの歴史にところどころ触れているのがありがたかった。
気になったところを友達に写真で送ったら、「この本、すごくいいってよく聞くよ！」とのこと。
