I knew the band Japanese Breakfast, and saw this book here and there, but finally got my copy.
H mart is Korean town in Manhattan was my go to.
In the beginning of the book “H Mart is freedom from the single-aisle “ethnic” section in regular grocery stores. They don’t prop Goya beans next to bottles of sriacha here” made me almost scream.
This book was, in a way, very traditional story of mother and daughter.
As an immigrant, I was closer to her Korean mom, but I read it in the position of Michelle, daughter.
It was very well-written, and funny, but made me cry too much.
Also, made me hungry with all those Korean food.
It was not the best book to read at work, despite how good it is.
Japanese Breakfast というバンド名は聞いたことがあったし、この本もいろんなところで見かけていたけれど、ついに手に取れた。
Hマートは、韓国の食品をはじめ、アジアの食品が手に入るスーパー。ニューヨークではコリアンタウンにある店舗にたまに買い物に行っていた。
冒頭の一文、『Hマートは、普通のスーパーマーケットの「エスニック」コーナーから解放してくれる場所。ここではゴヤビーンズ（メキシカン）とスリヤッチャソース（タイ風の辛いソース）を並べて置いたりしない。』
そう！と思った。
普通のアメリカのスーパーではアジア料理の食品が各国ごとに独立しておいてあるどころか、いわゆる西洋料理以外の全てと混ぜられている。
読み始めると、予想外に伝統的な、というか、ストレートに母と娘の話なので、ぐんぐん引き込まれた。
でも泣けて泣けて困った。
仕事の合間に読むのにはあまり向いていない。
韓国からの移民である母の方がわたしにとっては近い立場だけど、
大半は娘としてのミシェルの立場に共鳴しながら読んだ。
それから、なんといっても、全編に出てくる韓国料理のおいしそうなこと！
英語の綴りにすこし戸惑ったけれど、どれもおいしいそうでお腹が空いた。
これも、仕事中に読むには向いていない点。

There were two cancellations.
Slow day.
I started a new book.
Michelle Zauner “Crying in H Mart”
It made me cry, and hungry!!
All those Korean food...
It was powerful, easy to read, and relatable for me.
But if you don’t relate immigrants or US, you might still can, as this is very classic story about mother and daughter.

新しい本を読む。
最近日本語でも出た、ミシェル・ザウナーの『Hマートで泣きながら』
最初から泣きそうになりつつ、数々の韓国料理の描写にどんどんお腹が減っていく。
英語表記の韓国語を口の中で発音してみたり。
京都の韓国料理のお店で働いていた時にいただいたものがたくさん出てきた。
一気に3分の1くらい読んでしまって慌てた。
とっても読みやすいし、いわゆる移民2世のミシェルの描く、韓国人移民のお母さんが、わたしには身近に感じるのでどんどん読んでしまった。
移民、アメリカ、関係なくても、ある意味王道な母と娘の話なので、重ねて読むことができるひとが多そう。

I read a lot today.
Almost cried, no, cried three times.
Thank god I was wearing mask.
When the mother was very sick, her Korean friend came to help.
And everything she cooked was dished we served this little Korean cafe in Kyoto.
Herbal tea, and pine nut porridge...
今日も読書を進める。
3回は泣きそうになった、というか泣いた。
マスクがありがたい。
後半に入ったけれど、ここからまたつらくなりそうで、明日、読めるだろうか。
病床の母のケアをしに、韓国人の友人が来て、韓国の薬膳を毎日つくる場面があるのだけれど、働いていた京都の韓国喫茶で出していたものばかりだった。
松の実のお粥、なつかしい～。
やっぱり体調を整えるために食べるものなんだ。

I continued reading my book,
but I had to switch with driver’s guide.
It was too much.
This book makes me cry so much.
今日も読書を進めたけれど、あんまり泣けるので、
交互に運転免許取得のための勉強をする。
だらだらと書かれた文体で、気持ちを落ち着ける。

I managed to read few chapter.
It is now going into the part after they lost mother.
A story about losing someone doesn’t say much about how that broken family lives the next day and after.
It felt real to me.
なんだか落ち着かないけれど、少し読書。
残された家族がどうなっていくのか、のパートに入って、なんというか、リアルだなと感じた。
誰かを亡くす物語はそこで終わりのことが多いけれど、
誰かが欠けた後の家族の、その後も続く日々を、
美化せずにそのまま描いているものってあんまりない気がする。

In the afternoon, I could read the book, but,
“I never realized just how important these trips had been for her, how much this country was a part of her” killed me.
There are many first generation story, but the biggest factor is, they and their parents don’t share home country.
I couldn’t keep reading, and so switch to driver’s license guide.
午後、ようやく本を手に取れたけれど
『母にとって、韓国への旅がそんなに大事だったなんて、この国が彼女のなかで、こんなにも大きな存在だったなんて知らなかった』の一文でもうだめだった。
移民一世と二世の物語は数多くあるけれど、ここが肝なのかもしれない。
親子で祖国が違うこと。
ちなみにアメリカでは移民一世はたんに移民で、二世から、ファースト・ジェネレーションと数えていく。
読めなくて、残りの隙間時間は免許の勉強をした。

In the afternoon, we let open the door and had this nice sunshine.
I finished my book there.
The last part didn’t make me as emotional as the rest.
The whole book made me hungry.
午後、バンの扉を開けて、ひさしぶりの太陽を浴びながら本を最後まで読み切った。
最後のパートは落ち着いて読めた。
1冊を通して食べ物の描写があって、ずっとお腹がすいていた。
