It was quieter in the afternoon.
So I started new book: “Cloud Atlas”
We watched the movie, and I knew it was based on a book.
And one of my student told me that it was better than the adaption.
When I was reading about the author, I realized that he also translated a book written by Japanese author who has autism.
I just watched a documentary last month or so.
Now I have good feeling about this book.

午後は静か。
新しい本を読む。
映画版を見たことのある、”Cloud Atlas” の原書。
日本語を教えている時に、この本の日本語訳を持っている生徒さんが、映画より本の方がいいと言っていたのを覚えている。
ようやく手に取れたけれど、500ページ。読めるかな。
作者の他の著書のページに、日本人の自閉症の作家さんの英訳が出ていた。
あ！知っていると思う。
先月ドキュメンタリーを見たところで、作者の人も出ていた。
一気に信頼度が上がる。
繊細そうな人だった。

It was a quiet day and also cold.
We ended up waiting in the alley where the afternoon sun hits.
I read my book there.
I knew this but this author changes the style completely for each chapter and by the time I get used to it, it’s different chapter…

午後、時間が空いて、寒いので陽の当たる廊下に椅子を持ち出して読書。
知っていたけれど、それぞれの章ごとに文体が変わるので、この章の文体にようやくなれた、と思ったら終わる。

I could read a lot again.
The first chapter ended abruptly and I was surprised but remembered that there was a scene in movie that one character complained that the book they were reading lacking pages.
The second chapter is located in 1930s, and much easier to read.

今日も読書が進んだ。
最初の章が文の途中で終わるのでびっくりした。
こういう仕掛けなのかな。そういえば映画でも本の続きがない、みたいなシーンがあったっけ。
次の章は20世紀初頭で、だいぶ読みやすくなった。

I started the 3rd chapter.
Now it’s in 70s?
The fist one was travel journal, and second one was letter.
This one is, what do you called? With a narrator.
The author changed not only the style, but form of writing?

読書は第3章へ。
ここまでは映画はほぼ原作通り。
70年代か？
第1章は日誌、2章が手紙形式で、3章は、これはなんて言うんだっけ、ナレーターがいるタイプ。
文体だけじゃなくて書体も変えてあるんだな、おもしろい。

By 3, we finished and read some book.
This chapter was supposed to be autobiography by grouchy English old man, and it is hard to follow.
If I haven’t watched the movie, I might not be able to read it through.

3時くらいに片付いたので少し読書。
この章はイギリス人の口うるさいおじさんの1人語りで読みにくい。
映画を見ていなかったらここは読めなかったかも。

It all went smooth, but we got one cancellation and so we could read.
In this chapter, it is near future, and there are some scenes not from movie.
This, I couldn’t tell from the movie, but in the future, they don’t write the silent syllable.
For example, example is xample. Night is nite.
It was very interesting.

スムーズに進んでいくけれど、キャンセルもあって、読書ができた。
次は近未来のインタビュー形式。
途中から急に映画とは全く違うシーンが続く。
映画では気づかなかったけれど、近未来では発音しない文字が削られている。
exit はxit に、night はniteになっている。
こういう細かい設定がおもしろい。

We had some time to read.
In the next chapter, the civilization was gone, and the world became primitive again.
For some reason, people speak with heavy accents which has some similarities with southern accent.
And this chapter was written as if a person was talking to kids.
The change of style and form is something I couldn’t tell from watching the movie.

待ち時間はあったので読書を進める。
次の章はさらに未来になって、むしろ原始的な生活になった世界の話。
なぜかアメリカの南部訛りをぐつぐつ煮詰めたような言葉になっている。
これは子供達に話しかけている形式。
この、章ごとに形式を変えたり、言葉のスタイルが変わっていくのは、映画を見ているだけではわからなかった。

It was almost full schedule, but all went smoothly.
So I could read today.
I’m getting used to the future language but I still have to try to understand.

予約は詰まっていたものの、スムーズに進んでいったので読書もできた。
未来語にも慣れてきたけれど、気を抜くとわからなくなる。

In the afternoon, I read a lot.
Now I finished all the first chapter of each era, and coming back to the second one, but in the opposite order, I guess.
In the near future Seoul, the world is capitalistic dystopia.
People has a small device called soul in their finger tip.
Cars are called Ford, phones are Sony, shoes are Nike.
I imagine that it would be fun to create those small details.

午後、たっぷり読書。
各時代の最初の章が終わって、今度は未来から順番に降りてくるように2章目を読む。
未来は2つあって、近未来のディストピアは韓国のソウルが舞台。
未来語の所々に韓国の言葉がまじっておもしろい。
未来人はソウル（魂）と呼ばれるデバイスが指先に埋め込まれている設定だったり、
車のことをフォード、スマートフォンはソニー、靴はナイキと呼ばれていて、消費者至上主義の煮詰まった世界観を表しているのかなと思う。
こういう設定を考えるのは楽しかっただろうなと思った。

I could read a lot.
It’s getting close to the end, and everything is excited.
I read a lot in a short time.
I need the next book.

ちょうどよく読書も進む。
いよいよ後半で、クライマックスな場面が多く、勢いよくどんどん読んでしまった。
あれ、これは次の本をそろそろ用意するべきかも。

I could read a lot.
In the end of one chapter, there’s a suggestion of the next one.
It felt like reading those well-crafted popping up picture book.
By now, I got used to those weird English, and that made me very excited too.
In the movie, there are more scenes that shows many connections, but for this part, I liked the original idea.

読書も進んだ。
ひとつの章がクライマックスを迎えて終わるごとに、次の章が示唆される形で繋がっていく。
仕掛けのある絵本を読んでいるようでおもしろくて止められない。
前半は苦労したそれぞれの時代の英語もそれなりに読めるようになっているし、
それも相まってどんどん読んでしまう。
うまくできているなぁ。
映画だともっとシーンが交錯して行き来するような演出だったけれど、この辺りは本の方が上手いかも。

I finally finished reading 500 pages book.
The story was very exciting to the very end, so I was thinking if it’s really ending.
The whole book was like a puzzle.
You can see the trick only on the last half though.
Like climbing, you work hard first, and you can enjoy the scenery in the second half.
It was fun read.

ついに読み終わった。500ページ越えは久しぶり。
最後まで事件が起こるので、え、これでまとまるの、と思いつつ読み進める。
裏表紙に書評の引用がたくさん載っていて、パズルみたいにカチカチっとはまっていくというのが最もピッタリくると感じる。
でもそれも半分以上読み進めないと見えてこないので、ご褒美のような感じ。
ちょうど登山で、前半頑張って、後半景色を楽しみながらだだだっと降りていくような。
とても楽しかった。
