We woke up little past 6.
Coffee and toast.
We left home by 6:30.
Today we went fo volunteering at homeless shelter at Okanogan.
Dan knows somebody from there, and we decided to help them.
They are working on the foundation of the shelter and today they pour concrete.
I wanted to see how to work with concrete.
When we arrived little past 7, 4 or 5 people were working on the surface.
We helped them by cleaning the edges.
Then we all went inside the main building and talked about this organization.
This area’s winter is severe and if you are homeless,
it’s really hard to live through winter.
They used to provide motel room, but with covid, it was too much.
With government grand, they could start building the shelter.
When we looked up them, I found their homepage which wasn’t really updated.
I told them that I can help with that, and they were happy.
They know how to build house, but not to use phone.
Building house is much more important.
I took photos of their plan and around the shelter.
Back home, Dan made pancakes.
Then I went outside and cleaned all tomatoes.
The baby deer ate all the tomatoes, and that made it easy.
I sow wheat afterwards.
The honeydew melon was getting old, so i picked one.
We went to farmer’s market.
Got tamales and corn, peach.
We bumped into Joe
Dan was working on the outside wall.
I took hot bath.
When I was out, Dan was talking to his sister outside.
It was nice evening.
I cut the melon, it was so sweet!
Brought some slices to Dan.
We ate rest of tamales for dinner.
Went to bed early as we will have a short trip tomorrow.
6時に起きてコーヒーとトースト。
6時半すぎに出発。
今日はオカノガンという町の、ホームレスシェルターを建築中のところにボランティアに行くのだ。
夫の知り合いが関わっていて、今日はシェルターのコンクリートの基礎をつくるとのこと。
コンクリートって扱ったことがないから興味があってわたしもついていった。
7時過ぎに着いた時には4、5人が表面を均しているところで、わたしたちも手伝った。
コンクリートは小石が入っている分、パテよりもむずかしい。
固まってから削ったりできないし。
1時間くらいで終わって、メインの建物の中に入ってお話を聞いた。
このあたりは寒くてホームレスになるとほぼ冬を越せない。
だからあまりいないのだけれど、それでも需要はある。
これまではモーテルの部屋を借りて運営していたのだけれど、政府からまとまった補助金が入ったので、まず冬の間だけ、それから年間通して受け入れられるシェルターをつくっているところ、とのこと。
ホームページを見たところ、あんまり活用されていないみたいだから、もし良ければわたしがやります、と言ったらとても喜んでくれた。
家は建てられるけれど、携帯の操作もよくわからない、というおじさんばかりみたいだった。
家を建てられる方がすごいに決まってる。
とりあえず、とてもきれいに描かれた設計図の写真と周囲の様子を撮って今日は帰る。
帰宅後、夫がパンケーキをつくってくれて食べる。
それからお庭へ。
昨日のシカの赤ちゃんがまた来て、残りのトマトをきれいに食べて行ったみたい。
実はまだ迷っていたのだけれど、これで気持ちよく片付けられる。
ぜんぶ引き抜いて、麦をまいておく。
ハニーデューメロンが裂けていたので収穫
ちょっと休憩してからファーマーズマーケットへ。
タマレを買って、ジョーに会ってしゃべったり。
コーンとモモも買った。それぞれ1ドルほど。
タマレを食べてから夫は外壁の作業。
わたしはお庭のことをいろいろ、種も収穫した。
夕方お風呂にはいる。
夫が外で妹と電話していた。
気持ちのいい夕焼け。
メロンを切ってみると、とてもあまくておいしかった。
夫にも持っていく。
夜もタマレを食べて、明日も出かけるのでちょっと調べ物をして、早めに寝た。
