yuko's diary 7/28/22

Woke up 5:30 and watered deep.

As I watered the trees, it took me almost 2 hours.

I wanted to do more, but it was already getting hot.

Dan went to check on Joe.

Had coffee, and made more pickles.

This time, there was too much pickle juice, so in the end, I made scrap pickles.

Green beans, radish, shiso.

I also canned two of them but it was not good idea.

Boiling a big pot with full of water made kitchen really hot.

Dan came back 2 hours later or so, and we stayed whole day in the bedroom.

He was sick, and I had soar throat, but I was not sure if this was because we left AC on for whole night.

We didn’t have fever, but conjunction, soar throat, and little cough.

I was not sure if this was COVID or not.

Anyway, it has been more than 2 years since we both got sick.

That was in Kyoto while we were visiting there in December 2019.

I was making plan to keep the kitchen cool.

How about plant some tree around house?

There were many aspects I had to consider.

Not to plant in the south so that we still have sunlight in the winter.

Not to plant big or invasive ones so that it doesn’t harm foundation or sewer.

And of course we need some tree which is suitable to this climate.

I ended up to decide to plant three short trees around house.

A white magnolia by the Japanese maple.

A dogwood or crabapple and some green one by the southwest side of kitchen.

Also maple or oak at the west end of the property.

Now I have plan, I just need to wait what’s coming to me.

Planting tree is fun, but lots of responsibilities.

108F.

When I stepped outside, there were two deers in front yard.

I shushed them, and they jumped away.

With this heat, no one is out, so they must felt safe walking around.

Dan made sausage sandwich with my pickles.

Little too salty, but it was nice.

But we’ll finish it in a flash.

Those pickles we can buy at store is really necessary.

Even after I started making things by myself, I barely think that I don’t need to buy that anymore.

Rather, it made me glad that I have that option.

It’s easy, accessible, and cheap.

We watched movie “Moxie”

A high schooler decided to attack patriarchy in her school using zine which her 3rd generation feminist mom inspired.

Each character should be written deeper, but overall, it was fun and good movie.

The very authentic way of using and making zine.

I also loved that she left her zine in girl’s bathroom.

We slept without AC.
