Thursday.
It was all white outside when we woke up.
I didn’t know it’d be snow.
Today we have to go down to the town, 2 hours drive.
We prepared quickly and I packed herb tea, and off we go.
We left earlier as we worried about the road condition.
The snow was still there, but it was fine on highway.
But it started snowing hard, with strong wind.
The snow coming at you straight but it will blow away right before it hits the front glass.
It was scary, but then, it suddenly stopped.
Around the lake, there is no snow anywhere…
It was like a magic.
Wow.
We made it safely, and went to eat at a bakery.
Then we stopped at the antique store we like, and I got old napkins, and Dan bought LIFE magazine from 1971.
Then we went to see a surgeon.
I have to have a minor surgery and today we went to talk about it.
He also examined me.
Everything went well except it started snowing hard outside.
I was more worried about the way home than the surgery.
We were on the road before 2pm.
It was crazy, but everyone was driving slow, so it was fine.
Just needed to keep the distance.
And it stopped as sudden as the earlier.
I guess the same snow storm came to south.
Phew.
It was so strange to see so many tumbleweed.
I told Dan that we don’t have word for it in Japan, and he told me that he never saw so many at once.
It was so windy.
We made it to home before the sunset.
The house was cold and we were busy warming up.
Also quickly made dinner.
Chicken and kale on rice.
We didn’t prepared but it dropped -7 tonight.
The sink and toilet in trailer were frozen.
We arranged heaters here and there to keep it warm.
What a day.
It was interesting.
木曜日。
朝起きたら真っ白。
あれ、雪降るって言ってなかったのになぁ。
数センチだけれどまた景色が違って見える。
今日は2時間ほど南の町へ出かける日。
ささっと用意して、魔法瓶にハーブティーを詰めて9時過ぎに出発。
道がどうだろうかとドキドキしつつ。
雪は残っているものの、ハイウェイは問題ない。
と、途中から雲が分厚くなって、吹雪になってしまった。
吹雪の中高速で走ると、窓ガラスに当たる前に飛んでいくので、ワイパーがいらないということを初めて知った。
視界も悪いし、風は強いし、うわぁと思いながら走っていると、湖の近くでいきなりパタっと止んだ。
晴れていて、どこにも雪が積もってない。
太陽が暖かくて気持ちいい。何これ、魔法？
カナダもそうだけれど、湖の周りにはなにか特別な力があるのかな。
無事に到着し、さっとベーカリーで軽食。
それからいつものアンティークストアへ。
2階建てで、もう、隅から隅までおもしろいものが詰まっていて大好きな場所。
人間って、無駄な物、おもしろい物、いろんな物を生み出して来たんだなぁとなんだか励まされるしうれしくなる。
台所で使う用に古いナプキンを何枚か購入。
夫は1971年のライフマガジンを1部。
やたらタバコと車の広告が多い。そしてどれもカッコいい。
いちばん最高な記事は、男性がヒールを履くようになった話。マーヴィン・ゲイのヒール姿も。
さて、今日の目的、執刀医に会いにいく。
簡単な手術をすることになったので、そのための話し合いと検診。
診療室にいる間に外は吹雪に。
道の途中で遭った吹雪がついて来たようだった。
医師との話より、帰り道が不安になる。
2時前には帰路に着く。
吹雪の中、とりあえずハイウェイに乗るまでナビをした。
その後は前の車にとにかくついていく。
みんなゆっくり走っているので、距離を保ちつつ。
ヴェロニカも今日同じ町にいるのを知っていたので連絡すると、ちょうどすぐ後ろを走っていて事故を見たと言っていた。ひー。
無事についたら連絡してね、と言い合う。
北へいくのでもっと雪が深くなるかなと思ったけれど、また湖の近くで止んだ。
そのまま、家に着く頃にはうっすら青空も見えるくらいの天気のよさ。
おもしろかったのは、タンブルウィードがものすごくたくさん転がっていたこと。
これは日本語がない言葉なのだけど、西部劇とかでよく見る、球状になって転がっている枯れ草のこと。
強風でハイウェイのあちこちに大小転がっていて、避けきれず何度か轢いた。
引きずりながら走っているトラックも見た。
日本にはタンブルウィードはないよ、と言ったら、夫もこんなにたくさんは初めて見たとのこと。
日が沈む前に帰宅。
家はすごく冷え切っていた。
急いでヒーターをつけてあちこち温める。
薪ストーブも。
同時に夜ご飯もつくる。
甘辛く焼いた鶏ももと焦がしたケールの丼。
今日はマイナス22度まで下がる。
油断していて、トレイラーの水道とトイレは凍結してしまった。
あちこち暖房を移動させて、水をぽたりぽたりと落としつつ様子を見る。
ああ、今日もおもしろかった。
